The reason most marketing doesn’t work

A few weeks ago, I jumped on a strategy call with a coach.
She’d been posting content for almost a year straight.
Three times a week.
Solid visuals.
Smart captions.
But no sales.
You could see the frustration in her face when she said:
“Stephen, I’m doing everything the experts say why is it not converting?”
So I took a look at her page.
And within about 30 seconds…
I spotted the issue.
Every post was educational.
Polished.
Perfect.
But it was missing one thing: a story.
Now, before you roll your eyes, hear me out
I’m not talking about “Once upon a time…” or “Here’s how I started my business.”
I’m talking about the moment that made the lesson matter.
Because that’s what storytelling in content marketing really is:
It’s not explaining the solution it’s showing the struggle before the solution.
So I asked her a simple question:
“When did you realize this thing you teach actually worked?”
She thought for a second…
then said,
“Probably the night I almost deleted my business account. I was done. I’d been posting daily, no results, and then this one client found me from an old story I shared about my burnout.”
Boom.
That was the real content.
Not the 6 tips.
Not the strategy checklist.
The story.
See, most content creators teach too fast.
They explain before they connect.
But if you build the story first
if you let people feel the moment behind your message
they trust you faster.
Because storytelling isn’t just fluff it’s marketing with emotion.
It’s the difference between “here’s what I do”
and “here’s why it matters.”
And that’s how you build a brand people remember.
