Hey friend!
It’s still Saturday night as I write this.
The storm hasn’t hit yet.
The wind’s just whispering through the trees
that eerie calm before everything changes.
By the time this lands in your inbox on Tuesday,
the hurricane should’ve already passed.
And here’s the truth…
I have no clue what that version of Jamaica will look like.
I don’t know if our roof will still be here.
I don’t know if power will be back,
or if we’ll be eating crackers by candlelight.
I don’t even know if this email will actually send.
But I’m writing it anyway.
Because right now, I’m caught between two versions of the same story
the one I’m living,
and the one I’ll only know once this is over.
And honestly…
that’s a weird place to write from.
It’s one thing to reflect after the chaos.
It’s another to write before you even know what the chaos looks like.
But maybe that’s what storytelling really is
learning to speak while the future is still forming.
Because if I wait until everything’s safe,
until I have power,
until I can write a tidy “we made it through” story
I’ll miss the heartbeat of what it actually felt like to be here,
in this in-between.
We forget that uncertainty is part of every great story.
The hero never knows what the next page holds.
They just take the next step anyway.
And that’s what this email is
a step.
So if you’re reading this,
I see you as a part of my community and I appreciate you.
And if I’m honest,
I think that’s the lesson I needed to remember all along:
You don’t write after the storm.
You write through it.
