I Thought I Was a Great Storyteller... Until This Happened
hear đź‘‚ me out
friend, I thought I was crushing this whole storytelling thing.
Until I stood in front of a group, shared a story about leaving my radio job
and watched the energy leave the room.
Eyes glazed over.
Polite smiles.
That “wrap it up” kind of silence.
Afterward, someone pulled me aside and said:
“It sounded like a list. I didn’t really feel anything.”
And yeah… that stung.
Because this is the honest truth
(i hate that cause by default truth is honest)
But my answer:
I thought good storytelling meant knowing the structure.
The beats. The flow. The formula.
But I missed the most important part:
What it felt like.
That’s what connects.
That’s what sticks.
That’s what turns content into a moment people remember.
Now, when I write, I ask myself:
Where’s the emotion?
Where’s the tension?
What did I learn, not just what happened?
Because people don’t connect with events.
They connect with meaning.

So let me ask you this:
What’s a story you’ve been telling that sounds “right” on paper—
but doesn’t feel like you when you say it out loud?
Try rewriting it today.
But this time…
start with the feeling.
And if it clicks, reply and share it with me.
I’d love to read it.
See you tomorrow!
Cheers,
Stephen
